Progress: he moves forwards,
softly, when slightly uncomfortable
I wiggled the pad towards
his hindquarters, and he moved his feet forwards. If I get this on both
sides, I'm happy. For now, asking him to stand still, and be tense, would
be unproductive. Standing still is great, and we'll get there. Right now,
I would rather he moves forwards and not over me, but stay with me, bending.

I have made small approaches
to make sure he doesn't get surprised if something changes sides over his
back and trough his blind spot all along. Here, he's already a bit "up"
because of the raincoat on the chair nearby. He's jumpy about the saddle
pad appearing on the off-side, and almost jumped on top of me. Had someone
just carelessly thrown a pad on him, he would have gotten more troubled
-- and perhaps even gotten to expect trouble and not be so trusting the
next time around.
Because of these small steps
from day one, and because I was aware this might happen, it was no biggie,
just another step towards preparing to saddle & get on. I got to release
for forwards movement. |

I
brought the saddle, cinch, saddle pad, and my raincoat. He wasn't too sure
he should get near all this! Then .. a clicker moment! Good boy. |
|
This
is the "after" snapshot. In the "before" snapshot, he was trotting uncomfortably
through the squeeze between myself and the saddlestand and scary raincoat. |
|
More
petting and rubbing. Used the girth to rub him with. |
|
Which
is it, do I ask him to move, or do I just swing the rope around? He made
the correct decision to stay, although he stiffened up, very obvious on
the video, he tenses/relaxes in synch with my (slow, careful) rope swing. |
